Generate product images with AI

How to generate a product photo with AI in the product editor, what an image costs, how to use it and why it is labelled “AI generated” everywhere.

No photo of your dish at hand? Univents generates an appetising product image with AI from your product's name, description and category. You see the image as a preview before you use it, and you pay a fixed amount from your AI credit. Wherever the image appears afterwards, it automatically carries the label “AI generated”.

How to generate a product image

  1. Open a product under Inventory (or create a new one).
  2. Give the product a name — without a name the button stays greyed out. The better the description, the more accurate the image.
  3. In the Basics section, click Generate image with AI below the product image.
  4. At the top of the window you see what the image is based on: name, category and description. Below, under Style and details, you can add your own wishes, for example “on a slate board, shot from above” or “rustic wooden table”.
  5. Check price and credit — both are shown in the window before you trigger anything.
  6. Click Generate image. This takes up to a minute; keep the window open until then.
  7. If you like the preview, click Use this image. The image is now the product image in the form. Save the product to keep it.
  8. If you don't like it, click Generate again — this creates another image and costs again. The amount is shown next to the button.

The image is square (1024 × 1024 pixels). On the booking page it appears in full inside the 4:3 tile, with narrow margins on the left and right — see Image sizes for products & locations.

What an image costs

  • Every generated image costs a fixed amount from your workspace's AI credit, currently €0.15. The window always shows the current price before you click.
  • Generate again is a new image and costs again.
  • If generation fails, takes too long or the image service rejects the description, nothing is charged.
  • Double-clicking Generate image creates only one image and charges only once.
  • If your credit is not enough, you see a notice with the link Top up AI credit. No image is generated before your credit has been checked.
  • Each workspace can generate at most 20 images per hour.
  • In the usage log on the billing page, the images appear under Image generation. More about credit in AI credit and usage.

The “AI generated” label

Under the EU AI Act, AI-generated images that look real must be recognisable as such. Univents takes care of this for you:

  • Every AI product image carries a small “AI generated” badge in the top right corner (shortened to “AI” on small thumbnails) — in the inventory, in the product editor, on the booking page and in the webshop, in the customer portal, in the configurator, in the kitchen monitor and in the packing list.
  • In quotes and invoices with product images switched on, “AI generated” is printed below the image in the document's language — for all layouts that print with the new engine. Layouts that still print with the previous engine (Word template) do not show this note; switch them under Print engine in the layout settings if you use AI images in documents.
  • The badge sits on top of the image and is not burned into it. The image file stays exactly as the image service delivered it, including the embedded provenance information.
  • If you upload your own photo for the product or remove the image, the label disappears automatically when you save. If you duplicate the product, the copy keeps the AI image and therefore the label.
  • The label cannot be hidden.
  • If you download an AI image and upload it again as your own photo, Univents can no longer recognise it as an AI image. You are then responsible for labelling it yourself.

What data goes to the image service

The image is generated by OpenAI (USA). Only the following is sent:

  • the product name,
  • the product description,
  • the category name,
  • your notes under Style and details.

No customer, event or personal data leaves Univents for this. The AI deliberately does not generate people, hands, text, logos or watermarks — the image shows only the product against a neutral background.

Tips for good results: describe ingredients, presentation and container (“in a mason jar”, “on a white plate”). Style words such as “from above”, “close-up” or “bright daylight” also help.

Generate a product image in the AI chat

You can also ask the AI assistant on the inventory pages, for example: “Generate a product image for the beef roulade, on a rustic wooden table.” The assistant generates the image and shows you the preview. It is only set as the product image if you explicitly say so. Price, credit check and label are the same as in the product editor.

Frequently asked questions

Is the image saved to the product immediately? No. Use this image puts the image into the form; it is saved when you click Save. If you close the editor without saving, the product keeps its previous image — the generated image has still been paid for.

Can I generate several AI images for the gallery? The AI image is always set as the main image. You upload additional gallery images yourself as usual.

What happens if AI image generation says “not available”? Then the image service is currently unreachable or not set up. Nothing is charged. Try again later or contact support.
