Top Products by Net Revenue

After reading this, you'll know which of your products generated the highest net revenue from invoice line items in a selected period, what they cost you, which margin is left — and how to adjust the date range.

The Top Products report shows you up to 50 of your highest-revenue items at a glance — including cost, contribution and margin. It is based on all line items from invoices and credit notes within the selected period, sorted in descending order by net revenue.

Top Products by Net Revenue

Opening the report

This report is now part of Financial breakdown — there is no separate tile for it in the Reports hub anymore. If you open an old link to this page, Univents automatically redirects you to the right view.

  1. Navigate to Reports in the left sidebar.
  2. Click the Financial breakdown card.
  3. In the Group by bar, select the Product view.
  4. The report opens with the current calendar year as its period (1 January to 31 December).

Use the Back to Reports link (top left, with an arrow icon) to return to the overview at any time.

Filtering by date range

The date filter with the From and To fields is located above the table on the right. Select a date in either field — the table updates immediately, without needing to press a confirm button.

The default range is the current calendar year. You can enter any date range you like, including individual weeks, quarters, or multiple years.

Understanding the table

Each row represents a product. The columns mean:

ColumnDescription
#Rank within the selected period (1 = highest revenue)
ProductName of the item from the product catalog
RevenueTotal net revenue across all invoice line items (minus credit notes)
CostPurchase value of the billed line items
ContributionRevenue minus cost
MarginContribution as a percentage of revenue
QuantityTotal quantity of billed units
DocumentsNumber of invoices and credit notes in which the product appears

All amounts are shown in euros excluding VAT. The margin is based on net figures as well.

The cost is the price that was stored on the line item at the time of sale — regardless of any customer discount. A discount therefore lowers the revenue, not the purchase: a fully credited invoice shows revenue 0 with cost greater than 0, i.e. a negative contribution.

“No cost recorded” and “Cost incomplete”

Not every item has a purchase price. For such line items the Margin column shows a note instead of a percentage:

  • no cost recorded — no line item for this product in the selected period carries a purchase price. Instead of an estimated margin you see a dash.
  • cost incomplete (n line items) — some of the line items have no purchase price. The cost shown is then too low and the margin too high, so the percentage stays blank.

In both cases nothing is calculated or estimated: where the purchase is missing you get neither 0 nor 100 %, but no margin at all. Add the purchase price to the product and future documents will fill in.

The same applies to the amounts themselves: if a product has no cost at all, the Cost and Contribution columns show dashes too — a 0 would claim “free of charge”, and showing the full revenue as the contribution would simply be wrong. If the cost is only incomplete, the recorded partial cost stays visible (that stock was actually bought), while the contribution stays blank.

What is included in the report

Only line items from documents of type Invoice and Credit Note that were created within the selected period are included. Quotes, delivery notes, and document templates are not counted. Line items without a product link (free-text line items) are also excluded.

So-called bundle components — the individual items that make up a bundle — are not counted as their own row: a bundle is counted as a whole. Line items that are not charged on the document are left out as well. This way every service is counted exactly once and the total of this report matches the document total.

That is why a bundle or recipe only shows a cost if a purchase price is stored on the bundle itself, or if Calculate purchase price from ingredients is switched on there. Without either, the bundle line carries no purchase — it reads “no cost recorded” even though the individual components are priced.

Frequently asked questions

The table is empty even though I have invoices. First check the date range you have set. The report filters by the document creation date. If your invoice date falls outside the From/To window, those invoices will not appear. Also check whether the line items on your invoices are actually linked to a product from the catalog — pure free-text line items are not evaluated.

Why does the revenue here differ from the value in the Finance dashboard? The Finance dashboard shows gross revenue (including VAT) and may use a different reference date. This report is based on net values from invoice line items. Both sources may also cover different time periods.

Why is there no margin for one of my products? Because no purchase price is stored for that product — the cell then reads “no cost recorded” or “cost incomplete”. The report deliberately shows neither 0 % nor 100 %: both would be a guess. See “No cost recorded” and “Cost incomplete” above.

Why is the cost missing for a bundle even though my ingredients have prices? Because the cost has to be stored on the bundle itself. Enter a purchase price on the bundle, or switch on Calculate purchase price from ingredients there — the row will fill in for future documents.

I can only see a maximum of 50 products. The report is limited to the 50 highest-revenue products — on screen and in the Excel export alike. If you need all line items, export the invoices via the Finance Documents list.

Can I export the table? Yes. Above the table, on the top right, you'll find the Excel export button — it downloads the Top Products list for the selected date range as an Excel file, with the same columns as on screen plus the number of line items without a cost.
